Alongside our WA GATE / ASET papers, there is now a free ICAS-style practice track for Year 4 and Year 5 students — Mathematics, English and Writing. It is deliberately light: your child works through the paper one question at a time and gets their score with full explanations at the end — a calm, low-pressure way for a younger child to get comfortable with exam-style questions.

What the ICAS practice is

ICAS is a set of well-known primary-school assessments in Maths, English and Writing. Our practice questions are written to the published ICAS assessment framework and organised by the matching year-level paper, so a Year 4 student practises Paper B content and a Year 5 student practises Paper C. It runs as a separate track from the GATE / ASET mock papers, with its own lighter format and its own progress reporting.

Subjects covered — Years 4 & 5

Mathematics

Year 4 (Paper B) and Year 5 (Paper C) — number, algebra, measurement, space and statistics, drawn from the ICAS Mathematics framework.

English

Year 4 (Paper B) and Year 5 (Paper C) — reading comprehension across passages, plus language and vocabulary questions.

Writing

A Year 4 and a Year 5 writing task, so your child practises composing to a prompt as well as answering multiple-choice.

What each practice paper includes

One question at a time

No wall of questions and no ticking clock. Your child reads one question, chooses an answer, and can move back and forth to change it — just like sitting the real exam, without answers popping up mid-test to unsettle them.

A score and worked explanations at the end

The paper is marked once your child submits — no right/wrong feedback until then, so nerves stay low. Then every question gets a plain-language explanation of why the correct option is correct. A stuck child can still reveal a hint while answering.

An AI tutor on tap

Not sure why an answer is right? The "Explain This" tutor breaks the question down further, in language a Year 4 or 5 student can follow — like having a patient helper beside them.

Saved progress

Every result is saved to your ICAS analytics so you can see which subjects and skills are improving over time.

How to start

1

Open the ICAS practice hub and choose a subject and year — Maths, English or Writing, Year 4 or Year 5.

2

Work through the paper one question at a time, moving back to change any answer if needed. Nothing is marked until you submit.

3

If a question is confusing, use the hint while answering, or the "Explain This" tutor once the paper is marked.

4

Submit for a score, then read the explanation for every question — even the ones your child got right — and check your ICAS analytics to see which subjects are improving.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ICAS practice really free?
Yes. The ICAS-style practice papers for Years 4 and 5 are free to take — Mathematics, English and Writing. You just need a free account to save your progress.
Is this the official ICAS test?
No. "ICAS" is a trademark of Janison. This is independent preparation material written from the publicly available ICAS assessment frameworks. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a reproduction of any official ICAS test.
Which year levels are covered?
Years 4 and 5. Maths and English follow the matching year-level papers (Paper B for Year 4, Paper C for Year 5), and there is a writing task for each year.
How is ICAS practice different from the GATE / ASET mock papers?
ICAS is a separate track with its own papers and its own reporting. It is a lighter, single-subject format — ideal for younger students or for anyone who wants focused subject practice rather than a full selective-entry mock.
How should my child use it?
Pick one subject and work through the paper a question at a time, moving back to change answers if needed. Nothing is marked until they submit — then read the explanation for every question, including the ones they got right. Short, regular sessions beat long ones.
