GATE Prep for Perth Northern Suburbs — Carine, Duncraig & Churchlands
A practical guide for families in Perth's northern suburbs preparing for the ASET. Which GATE schools to nominate, estimated TSS cutoffs, suburb-by-suburb school fit, and how to build an effective preparation plan from Carine to Gwelup.
GATE schools accessible from Perth's northern suburbs
Families in Carine, Duncraig, Woodvale, Padbury, Hamersley, and nearby suburbs have several GATE schools within reasonable travel distance. Here are the most relevant, in approximate TSS order:
GATE program since the 1980s. Strong community culture, well-known in the northern suburbs.
GATE plus specialist music and screen/media programs. One of Perth's most popular specialist schools.
Newest Perth GATE school (opened 2020). Modern campus, inner-north location, newer ATAR history.
Very strong academic reputation. Particularly popular with families in the western suburbs and Nedlands area.
Most selective. Academic-only school with no local intake. Perth's highest average ATAR school.
TSS figures are estimates based on available community data. See all GATE school cutoffs.
Which GATE school is best for your suburb?
GATE places are offered based on TSS, not geography — but proximity matters for families thinking about daily travel. Here's a quick suburb-by-suburb guide:
Carine Senior High School GATE — what to know
Carine SHS is the natural first-choice GATE school for many families in the northern suburbs, particularly those in Carine, Duncraig, Hamersley, and Padbury. It's been running a GATE program since the 1980s, making it one of the longest-established GATE schools in WA.
The GATE program at Carine follows the standard WA DoE Academic extension curriculum. Students are grouped with the GATE cohort for core subjects and follow an accelerated pathway through Year 7–12. The school has a strong community feel and is a common choice for families who want academic extension without the long commute to Shenton or Perth Modern.

Churchlands SHS — GATE plus specialist programs
Churchlands SHS is a popular alternative for families in Karrinyup, Gwelup, Innaloo, and Scarborough who want both GATE and specialist arts or music programs. Churchlands offers GATE alongside specialist Screen & Media and Music programs, which makes it unique among Perth's selective entry schools.
The GATE TSS requirement at Churchlands is slightly higher than Carine (estimated 230–238) but lower than Shenton or Perth Modern, making it a realistic target for strong students who live in the northern/inner-northern suburbs.
Preparation tips for northern suburbs families
Nominate 3 schools in preference order
Most families nominate Carine SHS first, Churchlands second, and a third (often Bob Hawke or Shenton). If you achieve the TSS for your first choice, you'll get it. If not, the next preference is considered automatically.
Don't assume a local school means an easier target
Carine SHS GATE places are competitive state-wide, not just for local students. Your competition includes students from all over Perth. The estimated TSS range of 228–236 means you need to be in roughly the top 20% of ASET sitters.
Start building fundamentals 12–18 months out
Year 5 students aiming for a 2027 ASET should be doing structured practice from Term 1–2 2026. Year 4 students should be building reading and maths habits now. See our Year 4 guide.
Visit the school open days in Term 3
Carine SHS and Churchlands SHS both hold open days in Term 3 each year. Seeing the school and talking to current GATE students and parents helps your child understand what they're working toward.
