Carine Senior High School GATE — what to know

Carine SHS is the natural first-choice GATE school for many families in the northern suburbs, particularly those in Carine, Duncraig, Hamersley, and Padbury. It's been running a GATE program since the 1980s, making it one of the longest-established GATE schools in WA.

The GATE program at Carine follows the standard WA DoE Academic extension curriculum. Students are grouped with the GATE cohort for core subjects and follow an accelerated pathway through Year 7–12. The school has a strong community feel and is a common choice for families who want academic extension without the long commute to Shenton or Perth Modern.

Churchlands SHS — GATE plus specialist programs

Churchlands SHS is a popular alternative for families in Karrinyup, Gwelup, Innaloo, and Scarborough who want both GATE and specialist arts or music programs. Churchlands offers GATE alongside specialist Screen & Media and Music programs, which makes it unique among Perth's selective entry schools.

The GATE TSS requirement at Churchlands is slightly higher than Carine (estimated 230–238) but lower than Shenton or Perth Modern, making it a realistic target for strong students who live in the northern/inner-northern suburbs.

Preparation tips for northern suburbs families

1

Nominate 3 schools in preference order

Most families nominate Carine SHS first, Churchlands second, and a third (often Bob Hawke or Shenton). If you achieve the TSS for your first choice, you'll get it. If not, the next preference is considered automatically.

2

Don't assume a local school means an easier target

Carine SHS GATE places are competitive state-wide, not just for local students. Your competition includes students from all over Perth. The estimated TSS range of 228–236 means you need to be in roughly the top 20% of ASET sitters.

3

Start building fundamentals 12–18 months out

Year 5 students aiming for a 2027 ASET should be doing structured practice from Term 1–2 2026. Year 4 students should be building reading and maths habits now. See our Year 4 guide.

4

Visit the school open days in Term 3

Carine SHS and Churchlands SHS both hold open days in Term 3 each year. Seeing the school and talking to current GATE students and parents helps your child understand what they're working toward.

Frequently asked questions

What GATE schools are in Perth's northern suburbs?
The main GATE schools accessible to northern Perth suburbs are Carine Senior High School (Carine), Churchlands Senior High School (Churchlands), and further afield, Bob Hawke College (Mount Hawthorn), Shenton College, and Perth Modern. Carine and Churchlands are the most commonly chosen for families in Carine, Duncraig, Woodvale, and nearby areas.
What TSS do I need for Carine SHS GATE?
Estimated competitive TSS for Carine SHS is in the range of 228–236. The exact threshold changes each year with the cohort. There is no published cutoff from the DoE.
Is Carine SHS a good GATE school?
Yes. Carine SHS has offered a GATE program since the 1980s and is highly regarded in Perth's northern suburbs. It has a strong community culture and consistently strong ATAR outcomes for its GATE cohort.
Can I nominate more than one GATE school?
Yes. You can nominate up to three GATE schools in order of preference on your ASET application. Your TSS will be compared against each school's threshold in preference order.
What if my child doesn't get a GATE offer?
Students who don't receive a GATE offer will remain at their local high school. There is no obligation to accept a GATE offer at a non-preferred school. Some families choose PEAC (Year 5–7) as a complementary enrichment program that doesn't require a school change.
Does it help to live near a GATE school?
For most GATE schools, no — GATE places are allocated by TSS regardless of suburb. Carine SHS does have a standard local intake for non-GATE students, but GATE placement is competitive state-wide.
