About Perth Modern School
Perth Modern School (informally "PMC" or "Perth Mod") is located in Subiaco, 5 km from the Perth CBD. It is a fully state-selective school — there is no catchment zone — meaning students from anywhere in WA can apply. It is widely considered the most academically rigorous public school in the state.
Perth Modern consistently produces some of WA's highest ATARs and university entrance results. Former students include prominent scientists, doctors, lawyers, and public figures. Admission is entirely based on ASET performance (and audition for Music and Language streams).
The Three GATE Streams
Perth Modern offers three entry streams, each requiring ASET + (for specialist streams) a separate audition or assessment. Students can nominate multiple streams on their application.
Academic (GATE)
Est. TSS 251.5+ · ~120–130 placesThe flagship stream. Students study a challenging academic curriculum across all subjects, with selective entry based on TSS. The largest cohort.
Music (GATE)
Est. TSS 251.5+ · ~30 placesCombines academic GATE curriculum with specialist music tuition. Students must audition separately in addition to sitting the ASET. Perth's premier music-selective program.
Language (GATE)
Est. TSS 251.5+ · ~30 per language placesStudents study an intensive foreign language (Japanese, French, Italian, or Indonesian) alongside the GATE academic program. Language interview required.
Understanding the 251.5+ TSS Requirement
A TSS of 251.5 or above (2027 entry estimate) places a student in the top 2–3% of all WA ASET applicants. To put that in perspective:
- The ASET is a WA-only exam sat by approximately 3,000–4,000 students per year
- A TSS of 252 means outscoring roughly 97–98% of all WA applicants
- The community-observed maximum TSS is approximately 301 (four sections, each standardised and summed)
- A student who scores above average in all four sections but doesn't excel in any will still typically land between 220–230
Key insight: Perth Modern applicants do not win by being exceptional in one section — they win by being consistently excellent across all four. A student who scores 27/35, 27/35, 30/35, and 18/24 will outscore one who scores 34/35, 34/35, 15/35, and 10/24 — because the z-score system heavily penalises weak sections.
These raw score equivalents are approximate estimates based on publicly known ASET baseline data. Actual conversion depends on the cohort each year.
How to Prepare for Perth Modern
Reaching 251.5+ requires a sustained, multi-year preparation strategy — not just a few months of cramming.
QR is the highest-leverage section
Quantitative Reasoning typically has the widest score spread — a student who masters QR can gain 10–15 extra TSS points compared to one who doesn't. Prioritise this section early.
Read books above your level every day
Perth Modern entrants consistently show strong vocabulary and inference skills. Read widely — non-fiction, literary fiction, newspapers — not just prescribed texts.
Time pressure is the AR challenge
Abstract Reasoning tests pattern recognition speed, not just accuracy. Timed mock practice with 45 seconds per question builds the speed needed for the top band.
Don't leave writing to last
Writing is marked on the official 24-point rubric. A student who scores 20/24 vs 14/24 gains significant TSS points. Real feedback (not just repetition) is the fastest path to improvement.
Start in Year 4 or early Year 5
The students who score 251.5+ typically have 2–3 years of structured preparation. Starting in Year 4 allows time to build vocabulary, number fluency, and writing quality gradually.
Track your TSS across mock papers
Use your mock paper scores to get a running TSS estimate. Knowing you need 251.5+ and seeing exactly how far you are creates the right focus for final preparation.
The Application Process
Expression of Interest (EOI)
Families register their child's interest with the Department of Education early in Year 6. The exact window changes each year — watch the DoE website from January of Year 6.
Sit the ASET
The Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) is held in early March at designated test centres. All four sections (Abstract Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Written Expression) are sat on the same day in approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.
Specialist stream assessments
If applying for Music, complete the separate audition. If applying for Language, complete the language component interview/assessment.
School nominations
On your application, nominate up to three GATE schools in preference order. Perth Modern is typically listed first by competitive applicants.
Offers released
Offers are typically sent in November–December. Students are offered a place at the highest-ranked school where their TSS is competitive.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What TSS score do you need for Perth Modern School?
- For 2027 entry, an estimated TSS of 251.5 or above is needed to likely receive a Round 1 Academic offer at Perth Modern School. The floor (below which an offer is unlikely) is around 244. The Department of Education WA does not officially publish cut-off scores — these are estimates that vary each year based on cohort performance.
- How many places does Perth Modern School offer each year?
- Perth Modern accepts approximately 180–200 students annually across all streams. The Academic stream takes the largest cohort (~120–130), with Music and Language streams each contributing smaller numbers. Total Year 7 intake is substantially higher when accounting for sibling priority and proximity exceptions.
- Does Perth Modern have a music audition?
- Yes. To be considered for the Music stream, students must both sit the ASET and pass a separate music audition. The audition assesses pitch accuracy, rhythmic ability, sight-reading, and performance on an instrument or voice. Academic GATE applicants do not need to audition.
- Can you apply for multiple streams at Perth Modern?
- Yes. Students can nominate both an academic stream and a specialist stream (Music or Language) on their application. If successful in both, they would typically be placed in the specialist stream as it is harder to secure.
- Is Perth Modern in a catchment zone?
- No. Perth Modern School has no residential catchment zone — it is an entirely select-entry school. Students from anywhere in WA can apply, and placement is based solely on TSS ranking (and audition results for specialist streams). This makes it one of the few truly statewide selective schools in Australia.
- What year do students apply for Perth Modern?
- Students apply during Year 6 (aged approximately 10–11) to enter Year 7 the following year. The application window opens in October of the prior year and closes in February. The ASET is held in early March of Year 6, with performance reports in May, Round 1 offers in June, and Round 2 offers in July. Students need to register with the DoE well before the February application close date.
- How competitive is Perth Modern compared to other GATE schools?
- Perth Modern is by far the most competitive GATE school in WA and regularly ranks among the highest-performing schools in Australia by ATAR and academic outcomes. A TSS of 251.5+ typically places a student in the top 2–3% of all WA ASET applicants.

Which Suburbs Do Perth Modern Students Come From?
Because Perth Modern has no catchment zone, students travel from across the Perth metropolitan area and regional WA. Historically the largest concentrations come from:
Inner western suburbs
Subiaco, Nedlands, Claremont, Cottesloe, Mosman Park
Closest to school; historically high representation
Northern corridor
Duncraig, Churchlands, Floreat, Wembley, City Beach
Strong academic culture; many families target Perth Mod
Eastern suburbs
Mount Lawley, Inglewood, Maylands, Bayswater, Bedford
Growing representation; good public transport routes
Southern corridor
Applecross, Mount Pleasant, Rossmoyne, Bull Creek
Students who choose Perth Mod over closer southern schools
Perth Modern is well-served by Transperth bus routes and the Subiaco train station (Fremantle Line). Many students use public transport daily, including some from the Hills and southern suburbs who have a 45–60 minute commute.
Commute note: A longer commute is a real factor. Families in Rossmoyne or Willetton sometimes choose their local GATE school over Perth Modern for this reason — even when the child's TSS qualifies. Consider travel time as part of your decision.
