Shenton College GATE — TSS Cut-off, GEP & How to Get In
Shenton College is one of Perth's most sought-after GATE schools — and it offers something no other top-tier GATE school does: a Gifted and Enrichment Program (GEP) for high-ability students who just miss the GATE cut-off. This guide covers both pathways, the estimated TSS, Year 9 entry, transport from Perth suburbs, and how to prepare.
Disclaimer: The WA Department of Education does not publish official cut-off scores. All figures are estimates from community data and historical patterns.
About Shenton College
Shenton College is located in Shenton Park, 5 km west of the Perth CBD. It sits within the inner western suburbs corridor — 2 km from Perth Modern School — making it a natural second-preference for families targeting Perth Modern. The school has a strong academic reputation, a performing arts tradition, and a notably supportive community culture relative to the more intensely competitive Perth Modern environment.
What makes Shenton genuinely distinct is its dual pathway for high-ability students: the Academic GATE program (Year 7 ASET entry, est. TSS 231–241) and the Gifted and Enrichment Program (GEP), a school-based accelerated cohort for students who demonstrate high ability but narrowly miss the GATE threshold. No other top-tier GATE school in Perth offers this kind of structured fallback within the same campus.
The Gifted and Enrichment Program (GEP) — Shenton's Unique Offering
The GEP is Shenton College's own high-ability program, separate from the DoE's GATE scheme. It is designed for students who score well on the ASET but don't quite reach the GATE threshold, or who are identified by the school as high-ability through other means.
Who it is for
Students who are high-ability but whose ASET TSS falls below the GATE threshold (est. 235). Also available to students who demonstrate academic potential through school-based assessment.
How it differs from GATE
GEP students follow an enriched, accelerated curriculum but are taught in separate classes from the GATE cohort. The program is rigorous but operates outside the formal DoE GATE framework.
The strategic value
For families where a child might score in the 228–235 range, targeting Shenton gives two bites of the cherry: GATE if the TSS is high enough, GEP if it falls slightly short — both at the same high-performing school.
How to apply for GEP
GEP intake is managed directly by Shenton College, not through the DoE ASET process. Contact the school in Year 6 to understand the current GEP entry pathway and assessment process.
What TSS Score Does Shenton Require?
A TSS of approximately 231–241 is typically needed for a Year 7 Academic GATE offer at Shenton College. At 235, a student is in roughly the top 4–6% of WA ASET applicants. The cut-off varies year to year — in strong cohort years it may sit closer to 240; in weaker cohort years, 235 may be sufficient.
Approximate estimates based on known ASET baseline data. Actual conversion varies by cohort year.
Getting to Shenton College — Transport by Suburb
Shenton Park is well-served by Transperth. Many students commute from both the inner western suburbs and from northern and eastern parts of the metro area.
From: Subiaco / Claremont / Nedlands
Short bus or bicycle ride. The school is walkable from parts of Nedlands. Multiple bus routes pass through the area. Approximately 10–15 minutes door to door from Subiaco.
From: City / East Perth / Mt Lawley
Bus to Shenton Park or connect via train to Daglish or Shenton Park station (Fremantle Line). Approximately 20–30 minutes including any connection time.
From: Northern suburbs (Duncraig, Greenwood, Karrinyup)
Bus to the city or a connection point, then bus or train south. Total commute approximately 40–55 minutes. Families from this corridor sometimes prefer Carine SHS for a shorter journey.
From: Southern suburbs (Willetton, Rossmoyne, Applecross)
Train or bus to the city, then west to Shenton Park. 35–50 minutes. Families in the southern corridor typically prefer their local GATE schools, but some choose Shenton for the GEP or academic culture.

Preparation Tips for the Shenton TSS Range (231–241)
Students targeting Shenton typically already have a solid base. The preparation challenge at this level is about eliminating weak spots rather than discovering new ground — your mock scores are probably already in the 225–235 range.
Writing: 19–21 out of 24 is the Shenton range
At the 231–241 TSS level, Writing scores of 19–21/24 are typical. The most common gap is in Vocabulary — students at this level usually have solid Ideas and Structure but lose marks with repetitive word choices. Build a bank of precise, varied vocabulary for your writing genre (narrative or persuasive) in the months before the exam.
QR: target 27+ out of 35
Shenton-range students typically score around 25–28 in QR. To reach 231–241 TSS, aim for at least 27. Focus on the question types you are dropping: ratio and proportion, worded problems, and number patterns are the most common loss areas for students in this range.
RC: master inference, not just literal recall
At the Shenton level, most students can answer literal questions accurately. The marks that separate 235 from 242 almost always come from inference and author-intent questions. Practise explicitly identifying implied meaning — quote the text evidence before answering to train this habit.
Consistency beats a single outstanding section
Students who achieve 231–241 rarely do it by being exceptional in one section. The z-score system means a student who is very good in all four sections outscores one who is exceptional in two but weak in one. If your AR is already strong, don't over-invest there — bring up your weakest section instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What TSS score do you need for Shenton College GATE?
- Based on community data, a TSS of approximately 231–241 is typically needed for an Academic GATE offer at Shenton College. The exact cut-off varies each year. The Department of Education WA does not officially publish school-specific cut-off scores.
- What is the difference between Shenton's GATE program and the Gifted and Enrichment program?
- These are two distinct programs. The Academic GATE program accepts students via the ASET — it is the selective, high-achieving cohort within the school. The Gifted and Enrichment Program (GEP) is Shenton's own school-based accelerated program for high-ability students who demonstrate academic potential but whose ASET TSS did not reach the GATE threshold. GEP students follow an enriched curriculum but are separate from the GATE cohort. Some families specifically target Shenton over other GATE schools because of this dual-pathway offering — if a child narrowly misses GATE, GEP is a genuine fallback at a high-performing school.
- Does Shenton College have a Year 9 GATE entry round?
- Yes. Shenton College has historically offered a Year 9 Academic entry pathway, giving students who did not enter via the Year 7 GATE round a second opportunity. Entry is competitive and based on academic performance and assessment. Check directly with Shenton College for current Year 9 entry availability, as pathways can change year to year.
- How does Shenton College GATE compare to Perth Modern?
- Perth Modern (est. TSS 251.5+) is more academically selective and has a stronger national ranking reputation. Shenton College GATE (est. TSS 231–241) is one tier below but still produces outstanding ATAR results and has a slightly more balanced academic culture. Many families prefer Shenton's atmosphere — it is smaller, less intensely competitive, and offers the GEP fallback. Shenton is also 2 km closer to the train line for students from the northern suburbs.
- What performing arts programs does Shenton College offer?
- Shenton College has a well-regarded Drama and Performing Arts program alongside its GATE academic cohort. The school has a strong tradition of theatre productions and music ensembles. GATE students can participate in these programs alongside their academic curriculum, making it a good option for students with both academic and creative strengths.
- What year do students apply for Shenton College GATE?
- Students apply during Year 6 to enter Year 7 the following year. The application window opens in October the prior year and closes in February. The ASET is held in early March of Year 6. Register interest with the DoE before the February close date — exact dates are published on the DoE website each year.
