Willetton Senior High School is Perth's premier GATE school for STEM-focused students, with one of the largest and most academically competitive GATE cohorts in WA. This guide covers the estimated TSS, what makes Willetton's program distinct, Year 9 entry, transport from the southern suburbs, and what to focus your preparation on.

About Willetton SHS GATE Program

Willetton Senior High School is located in Willetton, 15 km south of the Perth CBD. It is one of WA's largest secondary schools overall, but its Academic GATE cohort is taught as a distinct, self-contained program within the school. The GATE cohort is known for high academic achievement, strong STEM participation, and competitive university entry outcomes.

The scale of Willetton becomes a significant advantage in Years 11 and 12. Students have access to a wider range of specialist electives, more ATAR subject combinations, and a larger group of high-achieving peers than at most other GATE schools. The school's strong Science and Mathematics program has produced state and national prizewinners in science olympiads and mathematics competitions.

What Makes Willetton GATE Distinct

STEM depth in Years 11–12

Willetton offers Specialist Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to its GATE students. The school's size means more specialist teachers and smaller class sizes in high-demand subjects than at many other GATE schools.

Competitive academic culture

The GATE cohort at Willetton has a strong internal culture of academic achievement. Students regularly participate in AMC (Australian Mathematics Competition), Science Olympiad, and debating competitions at state level.

Wide elective range in senior school

One of Willetton's most cited advantages by former students: the sheer range of ATAR and endorsed program options in Years 11–12. Students can study unusual combinations unavailable at smaller schools.

Languages program

Willetton offers Languages Other Than English (LOTE) programs including Japanese and Italian. GATE students who want to maintain language study alongside a rigorous science/maths program can do so here.

What TSS Score Does Willetton Require?

A TSS of approximately 232–243 is typically needed for a GATE offer at Willetton SHS. At 232, a student is in roughly the top 5–8% of WA ASET applicants.

Getting to Willetton SHS — Transport from Key Suburbs

Willetton is in the southern suburbs, well connected by Transperth bus. Most students from the Canning Vale, Bull Creek, Riverton, and Shelley corridor have a relatively short commute.

From: Willetton / Bull Creek / Riverton

Very close — 5–15 minute bus or car ride. The school's catchment covers much of this area for standard enrolment, so the commute is manageable. Many students walk or cycle within the immediate area.

From: Shelley / Rossmoyne / Canning Vale

Bus via Willetton Shopping Centre or Leach Highway corridor. Typically 10–25 minutes. Families from Rossmoyne sometimes choose between Willetton and Rossmoyne SHS based on program preference rather than commute.

From: Applecross / Mt Pleasant / Ardross

Bus north via Canning Highway or south via Leach Highway. Approximately 20–35 minutes. Some students from Applecross prefer the Willetton STEM program over their local Applecross SHS.

From: Inner city / East Perth / Victoria Park

Bus south via Welshpool Road or Leach Highway. 30–45 minutes. Families from this area occasionally target Willetton specifically for the STEM program if Perth Modern is out of reach.

Preparation Tips Specific to the Willetton TSS Range

1

QR is Willetton students' strongest section — don't fall behind

The Willetton GATE cohort skews STEM-strong. Students targeting 232–243 who are weaker in QR than in AR are at a structural disadvantage. Prioritise QR in the 3–6 months before the exam: fractions, ratios, algebra, and data interpretation are the most tested topics.

2

RC gap-close: non-fiction reading is the highest lever

For students already in the 224–232 range, RC is typically the section with the most improvement headroom. Read newspaper opinion pieces, science magazine articles (e.g. Australian Geographic, New Scientist), and history non-fiction. These text types match the RC passages more closely than fiction.

3

AR: complete all questions even if guessing

In AR, incomplete papers hurt more than wrong answers. At timed mock pace, if a question takes more than 45 seconds, make your best guess and move on. Students who complete all 35 AR questions — even imperfectly — almost always outscore students who leave items blank.

4

Start structured prep by the end of Year 5

To reach 232–243, most students need at least 12 months of consistent practice. Students who begin structured ASET preparation in Term 4 of Year 5 typically have the most controlled, low-stress final year. Cramming in the final term rarely produces results above 228.

Frequently Asked Questions

What TSS score do you need for Willetton SHS GATE?
Based on community data, a TSS of approximately 232–243 is typically needed for an Academic GATE offer at Willetton Senior High School. The exact cut-off varies each year. The Department of Education WA does not officially publish school-specific cut-off scores.
Is Willetton SHS good for students interested in STEM?
Yes — Willetton SHS has one of the strongest STEM reputations of any GATE school in Perth. The school has strong Science and Mathematics programs, participates in competitive science and mathematics olympiads, and offers Specialist Mathematics and Physics to GATE students in Years 11–12. Students who are specifically strong in QR and AR (which correlates with STEM aptitude) tend to thrive in the Willetton environment.
Does Willetton SHS have a Year 9 GATE entry round?
Willetton SHS has historically offered Year 9 Academic entry for high-ability students who did not enter via Year 7 GATE. This gives a second opportunity for students who may have underperformed on the Year 6 ASET or who were not yet in WA. Check directly with Willetton SHS for current Year 9 entry availability.
Does Willetton's large school size affect the GATE experience?
Willetton is one of WA's largest secondary schools overall, but GATE students are taught in a distinct cohort within the school. The large school size is actually an advantage in Years 11–12, where the breadth of elective subjects, specialist teachers, and extracurricular options is significantly wider than at smaller schools. Students who value having many academic and co-curricular choices benefit from this scale.
Is Willetton SHS GATE competitive for university entry?
Yes. Willetton SHS GATE students consistently achieve strong ATARs, with many entering top university programs including Medicine, Engineering, Law, and Commerce at UWA and Curtin. The school's proximity to the Curtin University and TAFE corridors also supports VET and dual-enrolment pathways for students who want them.
What year do students apply for Willetton SHS GATE?
Students apply during Year 6 to enter Year 7 the following year. The application window opens in October the prior year and closes in February. The ASET is held in early March of Year 6. Register interest with the DoE before the February close date.
